Cary helps Lan, a young
Vietnamese orphan and refugee, find her American father. Cary
soon locates Steve Marsh and finds out Steve met and fell in
love with Lan's mother during the Vietnam war, thinking he would
be killed before he could return home to Alicia, his fiancee.
But Steve did return and married Alicia and now he wants nothing
to do with Lan so Alicia won't find out. While becoming attached
to the Lan himself, Cary continues to look for a way to reunite
Steve and his daughter.

When things don't seem to
be working out for Lan and her father, Lan asks Cary if he would
be her father.
Lan is waiting for Cary
at his desk, sitting in his chair ...
Lan: Hello ... you're
the boss?
Cary: Sometimes I wonder.
Rita: (Smiles.) He's the boss.
Talking about the photos
they have of Lan's father ...
Rita: You were right,
Cary. Don't start with the man, start with the building.
On the phone, discussing
Lan ...
Cary: It's funny
... I've always wanted a daughter. But I spent so much time on
the road. If there was a way to take care of her, I would. (He
thinks about it.) But it's not the answer. When are you coming
home? I'm going to need you on this.
Daisy: (Smiles.) Well, I'm glad to hear
that. I'll let you know in the morning after I try something.
Cary?
Cary: Yeah?
Daisy: I'm glad you met Lan. I think you
needed her just as much as she needed you. And before you argue
with me ... good night.
(She hangs up. Cary looks at the phone, then smiles as he hangs
it up.)
Cary: Good night, Daisy.
Cary: I often find that the past explains
the present.
