This show has some of the
lighter moments of the series and comes from the interaction
between Cary and the comically stodgy Alan. Cary wasn't going
to take Alan's case, but after stopping to talk to Daisy as he
walked Alan to the door, Daisy sided with Alan and basically
left Cary with no choice.
Kate is mentioned several
times throughout the show.
Daisy: Any luck with our love-sick commuter?
Cary: (Sighs.) He's had the same job for
ten years ... the same home. And a good credit rating.
Daisy: You sound disappointed.
Cary: He seemed so crazy.
Daisy: That's the way people act when they
are in love.
(Cary looks up at her and grins.)
Cary: Is that so?
Daisy: At little less work ... a little
more recreation and you might be better equipped to handle cases
like this one.
Cary: Mmmm ... and in the mean time, aren't
I fortunate to have you to explain them to me?
(Daisy thinks about it.)
Daisy: I'm not sure.
(They both smile.)
Michelle: He told me that he loved me ...
that there was no one else. There was.
Cary: And that hurt you so much that you
now avoid relationships altogether?
Michelle: Yeah.
Cary: That's very lonely. I know. Because
I've been avoiding relationships myself. I had the best and I
don't want anything less. But do you know how that leaves me?
(Michelle shakes her head.) Alone ... most of the time. But my
wife's dead. Until I can accept her loss fully, I'm suffering
an even greater loss.
Michelle: I just don't want to get hurt again.
Cary: Alan Nettles would be the last person
on earth to hurt you.
Michelle: I can't ... take that chance.
Cary: We're not talking about marriage
... just getting to know him.
Michelle: That's how it all begins.
Cary: And for you ... ends.
(The final scene takes place
outside by the pool of Cary's mansion. Daisy is sitting at the
edge of pool and Cary is sitting in a chair across from her.
They are talking and Cary is holding a postcard from Alan.)
Daisy: I don't know why you found that
man so hard to relate to. I see a lot of everyone in him.
Cary: Looking forward to a beautiful face
each day and feeling a strong desire to know that woman ... I
guess it's not that outlandish.
Daisy: So you're glad you took the case?
Cary: Oh, now what is it, Daisy ... do
you need to hear you were right?
Daisy: I don't need to hear that I was
right ... I know that I was right. What I need to hear is that
Cary Maxwell is also going to start taking some risks.
Cary: I hired Fletcher, didn't I? (Daisy
playfully frowns at him. Cary looks at her for a moment.) And
I invited you over today. Both are decisions I don't regret.
(Daisy smiles at him and dives into the pool.)
